The War That Saved my Life is an intriguing book about a ten year old girl named Ada who lived during World War II. Ada was born with a club foot, a disability that made it hard for her to walk. Her mom was embarrassed of her disability and forced her to live isolated in her room. When rumors spread about the Germans planning to invade the UK where she lived, her brother Jamie was going to be evacuated but not Ada. She realized that she had to come along with Jamie to start a new life, without being trapped and unable to leave her room.
Once the evacuation started, Ada put on a shoe on her non-disabled foot and left with Jamie to leave for the train that is transporting her. During the ride, everyone looks at her with confusion and bewilderment. She feels uneasy and is happy to get off the train. They meet their new caretaker, Susan Smith who would keep them safe during the war. Ada Learns how to ride a horse, but the teacher said that Ada couldn’t join school yet but Jamie could. Susan writes to Ada’s mom for permission to operate on her foot but they get no response so they get crutches for her.
I liked this book because it taught me a lot about life back in the 1930’s and 1940’s. I like a lot of historical fiction because you can get interested in the story while also learning about events that happened in history.
It is also a lesson about how to not treat people unfairly because of a disability.
