Hoot is an intriguing book about a boy, Roy, who just moved to Florida. As Roy seeks to uncover the mystery within the plot, he goes through many obstacles along the way.
One day, Roy see’s a construction site near his house. They are building a chain pancake place under the name Mother Paula’s. Roy soon discovers that there is vandalism happening there, pranks are being pulled and no one knows why. Soon Roy finds out a secret, there are baby owls living on the property that they are building on. It’s against the law to build on top of holes without having a permit. Will Roy discover that they are hiding documents that they didn’t sign or will he come up short of finding anything? From getting bullied to solving a mystery and protecting owls, Hoot is an excellent book on how one person can truly make a difference if they set their mind to it.
My favorite part of Hoot is during chapter 20, when Roy tells Mother Paula that if they hurt another owl, then he won’t eat another pancake. Roy exclaims, “If you hurt a single one of our owls, I’m not eating any more of your stupid pancakes.” This passage shows that Roy is willing to give up almost anything to protect something he cares for, leaving the owls in peace.
I recommend this novel for people who care deeply about animals and their safety because Roy has a passion for them.
