The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street is an amusing book about a family with 5 children, Isa, a twelve year old violinist, Jessie, a smart and intellectual twelve year old, Oliver, a nine year old that lets his imagination run wild, Hyacinth, an energized and brave five year old, and Jack, a responsible, though quiet thirteen year old. This story is based around Harlem during the Christmas season.
The Christmas season just started and the Vanderbeekers are ready, however, one day they receive bad news. Their landlord, grumpy old Mr. Beiderman has refused to renew their lease. Since they have lived there most of their lives, they had to try to convince him to let them stay. Will they succeed, or have to move away? From giving Mr. Beiderman cookies, to having a party and inviting him over, the funny and creative Vanderbeeker kids try everything to work together and convince him to let them stay. This inspiring book has many twists and turns that make it such an awesome book to read.
My favorite part of this book was that the Vanderbeekers would try anything for Mr. Beiderman to let them stay. It shows their motivation and confidence which was mixed with comedy, which made the book one of my favorites. It was even more relatable for me because I was born in New York City, and I go back there every summer, so it was cool to read about all the kids adventures in the city.
I would recommend this book for anyone that loves family stories and the power of never giving up. Mainly, 1st-5th would enjoy this book in my opinion. This book is also for people who wonder what it would be like to grow up in New York City.
