The City of Ember is a dystopian and science fiction novel written by Jeanne DuPrau. City of Ember, is the first book in a series of four. I’ve also read The People of Sparks. The City of Ember is the last dying city, and it needs to be saved. It has failing infrastructure and blackouts are happening which terrify and de-stabilize the population. Lina and Doon think there is a way out of Ember, however they have yet to discover it.
Will they succeed and bring everyone to a new city, where everything is safe? Or will they fail and have them and their city be encompassed by the blackouts?
My favorite part of the City of Ember is when Lina and Doon find the boats in the pipeworks and agree that they have a solution to get everyone out of Ember. It was a big plot twist in the book and I love when a book is able to surprise me. Dystopian novels aren’t a genre that I typically read. Although it was very dark, and didn’t contain a lot of humor, I really ended up caring for the characters and rooting for them to succeed as they went into the pipeworks and tried to look for a way to get the population out of Ember.
I recommend this book to people that like science fiction novels with many plot twists, or adventures with confident and smart kids as the heroes.
