Restart is another hilarious, engaging book by one of my favorite authors, Gordon Korman. Chase Ambrose, the 8th grade star football player at Hiawassee Middle School, fell off the roof of his house and developed amnesia. He wakes up in the hospital and can’t remember anything about his life including his parents’ names! The one thing that he remembers is kind of a weird, mysterious image that he keeps seeing: a blond girl in a blue dress.
Once he gets out of the hospital, he goes home and rests. Chase visited his school and realized that he was a star athlete. He wonders if he was not a good kid when the principal tells him that this is a good chance for him to make a change. Later, Chase’s friends tell him that they all bullied a kid named Joel so hard that they get arrested for it, and Joel moved away to boarding school.
Chase’s memory is slowly coming back. He remembers being mean to his sister and how to play football. When Chase shows up at football practice and he can’t play, the football team gets upset. Chase meets an old war veteran and slowly begins to piece together some of the bad things he did before he fell of the roof. Will he be able to make a change and “restart” his life? Or will he go back to his bullying ways with his old friends Aaron and Bear? You have to read this book, it is so interesting to see how people can get a second change at life to try to be different.
Restart was a fun book for me because it had many different themes like a fresh start. It was also full of interesting surprises and twists, which I love. It teaches important lessons like bullying kids and being tough isn’t what makes you cool, it makes you unfriendly and that’s not a good way to have friends. Restart teaches you the importance of friendship and second chances which is very important in life. This book would be good for kids in 4th-6th grades.
